Inspired by my own deep-rooted connection to the Maritimes, Minas Matter: A Deconstruction / Reconstruction of Landscape explores the notion of genealogical identity existent within a specific geographical location. The narratives of both the geological and cultural histories of this particular place parallel the striations of the landscape as well as my own ancestral lineage. From Mi’kmaq to Acadian cultures and the subsequent Planter and Loyalist elements, this work is an exercise to acknowledge and understand the histories that have helped build a geographical and cultural identity. The project serves as an investigation into my own relationship with the land through experimentations with its de-construction and re-creation.
